NEWPORT

Newport Writing Squads

Three English language Writing Squads are run by Newport City Council with fifteen to twenty members in each squad.   A wide range of writing genres are offered to each group through a varied programme of workshops with regular guest visits from published writers.

Members of the Local Education Authority’s English Advisory Team are responsible for the Squads with events organised by Linda Jordan (linda.jordan@newport.gov.uk).

Primary Group

1. Newport Writing Squad
The group is made up of representatives from schools across Newport. The pupils have been selected from Key Stage 2 as a result of their ability in writing and potential for development. The Squad meets for an all day workshop 3 times a year led by a member of the English Advisory Team.

Recent Activities:

• BBC Digital storytelling project.
• ‘Writing in Role’ at Llancaiach Fawr Manor House.
• Travel Writing workshop held on a train, led by travel writer Tom Anderson in conjunction with Arriva Trains Wales.
Forthcoming workshops will be held at Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, High Cross with writing based on the changing seasons of the locks.

Secondary Groups

2. Newport Schools Writers’ Group
Year 7 and 8 pupils are led by published travel writer and teacher Tom Anderson. Sessions are held on Saturday mornings with regular guest visits from published writers.

Recent Activities:

• Describing place and  use of the senses – Tom Anderson
• Use of dialogue with Barrie Llewellyn, lecturer in Creative Writing at University of Glamorgan
• Poetry session with local poet Paul Henry
• Journalism and Magazine writing with Dylan Moore
• Imagination Techniques – Tom Anderson
• Developing Character – Gary Raymond

3. Newport Schools Writers’ Academi
Year 9 to Year 13 students are led by journalist and teacher Dylan Moore. Meeting on Saturday mornings, the group enjoys a varied diet of writing approaches brought to the sessions by the guest writers.

Recent Activities:

• Fiction workshop using extracts from graphic novels as stimuli with  Matthew David Scott
• Scriptwriting workshop with Owen Thomas
• Introduction to classic workshop exercises with Gary Raymond
• Poetry and memoir with Clare Potter
• Travel Writing with Tom Anderson
• Book Reading with Darran Shan
